More than six reigning K-town directors have joined hands with Tollywood stars this year after top-of-the-line Telugu directors like Puri Jagannath, Trivikram Srinivas, Gunasekar, Srinu Vytla, Jayanth and Vinayak failed to pull in sufficient audiences. Tamil directors like Gautam Menon, Vishnuvardhan, R.V. Udayakumar, Selvaraghavan, Linguswamy and Dharani have won over T-town stars in their search for a winning streak in 2011. It looks like Telugu superstars have lost confidence in T-town dream merchants.
Among the leading stars who have cast their lot with Kollywood’s directorial talent are Pawan Kalyan, Ram Charan, Mahesh Babu, Allu Arjun and Ram. It was superstar Pawan Kalyan who set the ball rolling this year by signing up for Shadow with Tamil film-maker Vishnuvardhan. “Director Vishnu came up with an exciting storyline, which is a good blend of romance and action, and is doing a fabulous job with meticulous planning,” says producer Devineni Prasad, who is happy about his maiden film with the K-town director.
Reportedly, superstar Mahesh Babu is also looking to hire talent from Chennai and has held a series of meetings with director Linguswamy. “I had a couple of meetings with director Linguswamy and I am impressed with his refreshing approach. We may sign up for a film soon,” he says adding, “I like to work with film-makers with a different mindset.”
However, last year, barring Gautam Menon, who tasted success with Ye Maaye Chesave, many Tamil directors like Samuthrakani (Sambo Siva Sambo), P. Vasu (Nagavalli) and Radha Mohan (Gaganam) failed to grab eyeballs. But, overlooking the mixed response, Gen X star Ram Charan Tej, who was bowled over by the intense sports-centric theme narrated by Tamil director Dharani is looking to revive the shelved project Merupu soon. He says, “Dharani is a talented director and the script is fascinating, so the film is on the cards.”
Alongside, hotshot Ram is excited about joining hands with Gautam Menon for a breezy romantic entertainer. “This New Age love story has strong potential to be a winner,” he says. Others in the pipeline are veteran director Kadir who could be doing a film with Varun Sandesh and director Surya.
Even Jr. NTR, who has always been loyal to Telugu dream merchants, will break his rule and do a film with cinematographer-cum-director K.V. Anand, whose dubbed film Ragam is making waves in Andhra Pradesh. Venkatesh too has reportedly urged ace Tamil director Bala to develop a script for him. “I like your kind of movies and would like to work with you,” the star is reported to have said.
But T-town directors are not too worried. “There’s no need for panic,” says director Chandra Siddarth, adding, “audiences have thumbed down films of both Tamil and Telugu directors when they failed to offer some novelty.”
