Shaitan Movie Review :- 3.5/5
Shaitan story : ‘Shaitan’ tells the story of five youngsters who are out to have a recklessly adventurous time but get involved in a botched crime. They have access to money, are from affluent backgrounds, but they don’t do anything, so they experiment with life like a lot of kids of this generation. Then comes that one moment, an accident, which turns around their lives.
In view of covering up the accident that they are associated with, the five youngsters pass through all the things that they hardly imagine before bringing out their inner Shaitan. Police Inspector Mathur [Rajeev Khandelwal] is trusted upon to deal with this case and what follows tells forms the rest of the story.
There will be too many adjectives that can be used after watching Shaitan but in one word, it is outstanding. Bejoy comes up with a script that usually one associates in real life and the way he handled it, take a bow Bejoy. From the script to the way he narrated it, everything fell in place for Bejoy or so we can say made by him.
The film, which starts off on a slow pace gears its momentum as it proceeds and there’s no stopping till it gets completed. The plot with twists and turns brings out the inner Shaitan of the lead as they fight the inner demons in their own capacities. Not a dull moment disturbs Shaitan as the thriller engages one to the last minute. Dialogues play their role as they are conversational, hard-hitting and youth-centric.
Shaitan does have its share of lighter moments. The parallel story of cop Arvind Mathur played by Rajeev Khandelwal at times slows down the pace of the film while climax too can be debatable. But leaving lighter moments, Shaitan stands out as a high speed thrilling cinematic once in life time experience!
Performances of the lead add to the extra zing that is required for the film. Rajeev Khandelwal [Mathur] as cop delivers a noteworthy performance showing his capabilities as an actor once again amidst fighting his inner Shaitan. Kalki Koechlin, Shiv Pandit, Gulshan Devaiya, Kirti Kulhari, Neil Bhoopalam, Yadav fit the bill perfectly. Especially Pandit and Kirti, who are debuting impress with their smart stint.
Technicalities make the film look better and sound better. Cameraman Madhie does an excellent job with the camera. He toils with the camera which only adds to the psyche of characters. Slick editing needs special mention. Sound design too stands apart. After one leaves the theatre the tunes will definitely haunt him. Remixed version of ‘Khoya Khoya chand’ has an impact. All fell in one place for Bejoy.
On the whole, the text in Shaitan’s promo, ‘It’s not mischief… It’s not lust…It’s not rage…It’s not excess…It’s that moment…that brings out the SHAITAN, is fittingly showcased by Bejoy on screen. The film is for youth and they will be definitely taken aback by it. Watch out for the cameo of Rajat Barmecha and the car chase scene.
