Rating: *

The Shefali Shah, Rahul Bose starrer, “Kuch Luv Jaisa’ is a Bollywood product that tries to be different but fails miserably while attempting the out-of-ordinary. The narrative is extremely banal, there is no story as such to tell and the script ( only a barebones premise as such) is conspicuously devoid of real solid drama. Now why would such a film even get made is a question that one must ask it’s producer Vipul Shah..or do we even need to? Shefali Shah, his wife is in the starring role so the reason is pretty obvious . The once plump and prosperous looking side actress evinces a transformation of body and form- into a taut, slim and sexy though discontented housewife Madhu Saksena who unwittingly accompanies a wanted criminal Raghu passport(Rahul Bose) while he is in the process of executing his getaway. What happens between them(it’s mostly what doesn’t happen) takes up most of the narrative space of the film’s close to two hour runtime. If you are expecting a torrid extra-marital affair between the two you are going to be in for a major disappointment.
The two meet in a restaurant , they are sitting at different tables . A mouthy waiter sets up the opening for a conversation of sorts between the two. Madhu makes the first move. She thinks Raghu is a detective on the heels of an adulterer and she wants in on the action. Now why she arrived at such a conclusion is never explained- Raghu never lets on about his true profession, his monosyllabic responses never hint at that possibility either. Madhu’s discontent with her husband and married life in general is quite obvious. It’s her birthday and her husband forgets to wish her. So she embarks on a self driven adventure. Buys a brand new car and befriends a criminal . But that’s about as far as her rebellion takes her. She is not brave enough to break the shackles of her conditioning. She is just a passenger in this dull lifeless journey to nowhere. Like us she is looking for excitement but neither the writer nor the director can come up with anything that can make the journey worth buying into. The script is a half-hearted elaboration of a premise that never gets developed into a full-fleged story. The narrative spiel is dull and unexciting and the process of watching two actors go through their respective routines without making any sense whatsoever , is extremely tedious and enervating.
A dull as dishwater Rahul Bose –the Raghu passport, is so ill at ease in a role that is not at all suited to his learned sensibilities that he makes the casting look ridiculous. Shefali looks out of sorts and completely ill-at-ease essaying a character that is the opposite of what she has been playing so far. It’s a mismatch just as the characters at play, and might have worked better with far more personable actors and sensible dialogues. Both Rahul and Shefali fail to generate interest – their thanda chemistry and pallid histrionics make for an unappetising and unviable combo. In all earnest, this is a film that should have gone straight to Video. Watch it only if you are suffering from insomnia!
